Start with the two-sequence requirement

In common 13-card Indian Rummy, a valid declaration needs at least two sequences, including a pure sequence. Arrange the remaining cards in permitted sequences or sets. A set cannot replace the required second sequence.

A pure sequence is a run in one suit without a joker substituting for a missing card: 4♥ 5♥ 6♥, for example. A group such as 4♥ 5♣ 6♥ does not become a sequence just because its ranks are consecutive. A joker used as a substitute makes the sequence impure.

Try separating this illustrative hand into four groups. Every card below is used once.

GroupCardsCheck
Pure sequence4♥ 5♥ 6♥Three consecutive hearts
Second sequence8♣ 9♣ 10♣ J♣Four consecutive clubs
SetQ♠ Q♥ Q♦Queens in different suits
Set2♠ 2♥ 2♦Twos in different suits

The count is 3 + 4 + 3 + 3 = 13. Both sequences are pure in this example; the second one does not have to contain a joker. This is an explanation of grouping, not an app screenshot or a promise about a round result.

Check the hand before confirming

  • Count all 13 cards and ensure that none appears in two groups.
  • Check suits as well as ranks in each sequence.
  • Confirm a pure sequence and a separate second sequence.
  • Check that sets contain equal ranks in distinct suits. Two copies of an identical card are not a substitute for different suits.
  • Read the format rules for jokers, ace order, drop options and declaration penalties.

For a useful error check, remove J♣ from the example. The remaining groups may still look tidy, but only 12 cards are accounted for. A neat display alone is not proof of a valid declaration.
